Ngong Ping Prayer, an original woodcut by Merlyn Chesterman is hand-printed by the artist on Rives BFK paper. Part of an edition of 50, it measures 100 mm x 100 mm. Merlyn tells the story of this particular piece of work, a tale of serendipity, not lost in translation:

"I grew up in Hong Kong and in holidays we would go to Lantau island, as a change from the city. It was cooler, too, up on Ngong Ping plateau, and the monks would ring a big gong through the night. I brought a ceramic tablet back, with a prayer that I didn't understand – the fact that it was from Ngong Ping was enough. One day I copied part of the tablet, in reverse, without any preliminary drawing, but with total concentration, and with the knife directly. I sent it to a friend afterwards and asked her if she could read it and if so, what did it say. She said she could read every word, it was a special Buddhist script, one I was very happy to have my side. Seems like some magic happened!"
