Elm Sky, an original woodcut on elm, has been individually hand printed and hand finished by the artist using oil based ink and a touch of gold leaf on Okawara paper. Each print measures 300 mm high x 300 mm wide. We love the striking elm base to the print and were intrigued to hear about its origins from Merlyn: "I print my work in St John’s Music and Art Centre, a church in the village of Hartland, North Devon. The trustees were getting rid of all the old school chairs, as they had woodworm. 'I’ll take them,' I said. I pulled them apart, having seen the elm seats, woodworm and all – in fact, it was more than woodworm, they all had that old-fashioned very pink bubble-gum stuck to the bottom. Bored children, many moons ago! They also had a label, Mealing Bros Ltd, High Wycombe. This company used to make chairs for overseas missions. I was so glad to be able to give them a second lease of life, and I still have a stack of them for future prints." Merlyn often uses a selection of fine Japanese papers for her prints. Following the tragic Japanese earthquake and ensuing tsunami in 2011, she wanted to help in some way and decided to donate 10% of profits from the sale of this beautiful woodcut print to Ark, a local charity focused on helping distressed animals.
