"This scene has stayed with me... We stopped in a hotel which looked over the lake, called Léman. I awoke in the night to find bright moonlight piercing the gap in the thick curtains. I got out of bed to look at the view, and this is what I saw. I made a quick sketch and some notes, working by moonlight, and painted the picture the next day while it was still vivid in my mind."
