The Memory of Movement by Jennifer Copley–May, original watercolour, ink & Caran d’Ache pencils on acid free paper, 200x250mm mounted, artwork 120x160mm
To “warm up” when exploring a new subject, I usually do lots of sketching. Each time I look, I see something not noticed before, and so the lines move and change. I don’t rub out, I keep looking and each time it is different, until a work gradually takes form. In this piece I have recorded some of the changes and movements of the pencil over the paper and some of the forms it took along the way.
This has created an interesting abstract interface of shapes defined by colour, blues, sandy yellow, pinks and even greens. Depending on the light falling upon rocks, all can be visible.
