Portals – Exploring Space and Consciousness

We’re delighted to be sharing a new body of work in the galleries, with a series of original abstract oil paintings that explore other worlds.

These stretch the boundaries between the conscious and unconscious, in a series that touches on mood, movement and momentum.

“Portals are thresholds between worlds — not only in space, but in consciousness.”

Grace Margarita’s canvases are dynamic and profound, tapping into reflection, spirituality and transformation. Many are large scale yet they augment the space that they inhabit, carrying the viewer beyond their confines, caressed by the delicacy of soft tones, or charged by potent blends of colour.

Organic shapes gently capture our attention, transporting us inwards and outwards, into different spheres. A handful have been left in our work space to write about, each having its own particular energy.

Our impressions are largely mirrored by Grace’s own thoughts regarding this collection of abstract oils: “I use the idea of a portal to describe a space where perception can change. Rather than representing a physical doorway, the paintings are intended to act as environments that you can enter just through looking. They are intended to draw you out of ordinary awareness, where another sense of space, time, or dimension can come into meditation.”

This group of paintings is part of a wider series, with several since sold. They emerged over a period of a year or so and were first exhibited in a solo show in London. “Each painting began with a colour, chosen in response to my mood at that moment, and was transformed in layers over time. The shapes are influenced by visions of trees, shells, and cosmic patterns.”
